Spring day, posted at 10:39 p.m.

Epiphany in Baltimore has moved to epiphanyinbaltimore.blogspot.com

Life is good. Not only are the Tigers in first place, but I'm also in first place in both of my fantasy leagues:

Mockingbird Killers
Corporal Punishment
Rank: 1 of 18

Catchers in the Rye
The Reef 2005
Rank: 1 of 8

The top line is my team name. Am I not the total English teacher?

Practice went until 6:40 today and no one noticed - yet another reason why I love Daylight Savings Time and warm spring days. We spent all of today in batting practice. I've gotten myself so good at BP that I can throw about 85% strikes. And I've also learned to use my legs more than my arm, so my arm is a little sore but not close to as bad as it was early in the season.

Our next game - game #2, after two rainouts following the 21-1 victory on Opening Day - is Thursday. I'm going to scrimmage with them tomorrow and hopefully excuse them in time for me to run downtown and go to my first Orioles game of the season. My goal this year is eighteen games, but with all the travel this summer I might be struggling to reach double digits.

In bad news, I woke up yesterday and put in my contacts and about a half hour later experienced terrible pain in my eyes, which had also turned blood red. My kids noticed it, I couldn't even have the light on, and one of my colleagues told me I should go home. A little bit of light and air made the feeling pass by 10 o'clock, though, so I pretty much ignored it. Today, though, I got up to go to the gym and put in my contacts. They didn't hurt, but about ten minutes into my drive over to Towson, I literally had to pull off the road (at Loch Raven and Northern Parkway) and wait a few minutes before turning around and going back home. I contemplated who I might call at 5:30am to come pick me up if I couldn't open my eyes, but eventually could get them open a little bit with quite a bit of pain, and made it back home. I took out my contacts and put on my glasses, and I was okay after that.

Still, it worried me. First off, I hate wearing glasses. I hate looking underneath the lens and seeing fuzz, I hate the feeling of them on my nose and my ears, I just hate it. Plus, my eyes are so bad and estigmatized that the distance from eyeball to eyeglass lens makes it difficult to see like I should and makes me a little dizzy. I couldn't wear sunglasses.

Second of all, the pain was severe and I figured if it had to do with flying, then it probably would have disippated by now. Nope. So I called up my retinal specialist, the guy who put a couple of bands of silicon around my eyeball to prevent me from going blind, and he says I don't have to worry, that it's nothing severe, but that I should come in to see him in the next week or so to check it out.

Anyhow, I'm going to try to wear contacts again tomorrow - my day seems 25% harder just with the thought of wearing glasses - but I'm going to put them in early so I can see if the pain will arise. Fascinating, I know.
